Collection: Romy Kühne

She was born on June 4th, 1987 in Rotterdam, grew up from her 3rd month in the medieval city of Deventer. Here she attended schools up to high school in the specialization Culture and Society.
Then, in 2005, she selected Artez art school in Arnhem. She preferred Arnhem because there, next to artistic expectations, the practical schooling in manufacturing seemed important.
By realizing many assignments and using many techniques Romy developed as a multitalented designer. Her vacuum-formed, synthetic water-can, her sewn fabric bags, her stoneware jugs and her glued and hardened paper crockery are only a few examples of this; her portfolio shows many more.
In all these designs and the making of them, she shows her feeling for material and design, paired with the will to make them in real life.
In 2008 Romy completed an internship at Franke Elshout's Fooddesign. Here she was confronted with the unknown world of food design. In the portfolio you will find a Food Cabinet, a series of bottles "Evolution" and a series of bakery forms "Schaal" that were made during this time. In the same period Romy participated, with Franke Elshout, in the exposition "Stuffed" during the Dutch Design Week in 2008.
For her graduation project Romy chose exploration of the theme "Mass tradition". By further developing techniques from the packaging industry and connecting them to traditional eastern folding techniques she created her own form language. With her paper crockery and vases she patiently balances on the border between mass production forms and unica. Thus confronting art world and mass industry to explore their own boundaries.
